TWO WAY SCHOOLING FOR ABORIGINAL CHILDREN IN ALICE SPRINGS

Yipirinya School is a unique, community controlled Aboriginal school that serves the town camps and outstations surrounding Alice Springs. Founded through the initiative of key Elders of the town camps in 1978, Yipirinya School is bi-lingual and bi-cultural school that plays a crucial in keeping language and culture alive. 

It is the only school in Australia that teaches five languages (Central Arrernte, Walpiri, Luritja, Western Arrernte, English) and is at the cutting edge of bi-lingual education in Australia.

What does Yipirinya mean?

Yipirinya means ‘caterpillar’ in Arrernte.

The school takes its name and ethos from the Caterpillar Altyerre Dreamtime story of the Arrernte people of Mparntwe (Alice Springs).

The school is registered as an Independent non-government school and is governed by a School Council.
